Either we trade the pick for much needed help on the blueline or we get what will probably be a very good player.
Win - win. |

To Mr. Jero the Potato and company, I'm gonna say this once more, but you are all highly underestimating Marchenko. Here is yet another great read that includes stats that are broken down accordingly.
http://www.wingingitinmot...-2015-16-alexei-marchenko
If Pulj doesn't sneak in at #4, I wonder if Chia trades the #4 to Detroit in exhange for Marchenko and the #16 overall pick (considering that we don't want to trade RNH)?
They will most likely draft Dubois since they will badly need a 2C that can form a 1-2 punch line with Larkin. Dubois will probably need 1 solid year of AHL development before he hits his high note and develops into that 2C that Detroit will be desperately looking for once Zetterberg retires (and once Datsyuk "officially" retires). AA will most likely be their 3rd line center who can play 2C minutes ONLY in times of injury. It also gives them depth at center and only at the price of an ELC contract, especially in a time where an expansion drafts may be a critical player in determining the future of every team.
For Edmonton, Marchenko fills the top 4 role that we need (If you seriously don't think he is a top 4 at this moment, you need to give your head a little shake-he was supposed to be drafted in the 3rd-4th round according to Jiri Fisher,l the director of player development for Detroit, but Detroit snagged him in the 7th round. So far he has shown way more than what was expected from him. Edmonton would then use the #16th to draft a RHD (McAvoy would be my pick since he seems to have the better ceiling when compared to his peers, plus he is noted to be drafted near the #15-#17 mark).
In the end both teams definitely benefit from the trade;
Edmonton gets a promising top 4 defender, a promising RHD prospect that definitely bolsters our prospect depth in defense, (This should definitely make Jero happy), we didn't give up a major piece (yet), and we can afford passing up on Tkachuk due to our good depth a LW with Maroon, Pouliot, Hall, Hendricks*, and possibly Slepy.
Detroit gains a prospect that can become their 2C once Zetterberg and Datsyuk "officially" retire, boasting a center depth of Larkin, Dubois, and AA, which is very strong. As for Stamkos talk, Detroit would be crazy to chase after him, especially considering the fact that it would be very hard for them to afford him. It might be possible, but from the looks of it, it's either Toronto or TBL.
Edit: The perfect thing about this is that a major piece can be used to acquire a player like Trouba, Dumba, or Shattenkirk, hell maybe even Hamonic. We could even offer sheet Jones if we wanted, which is an interesting idea, but it has to be played out well. An offseason where Chia gets 3 very good (including a prospect) RHD defenders (Marchenko, McAvoy, Trouba/Dumba/Shattenkirk/etc would be an automatic A+++ for Chia). |

I gave him a look after you brought him up the first time. He seems serviceable but nothing special IMO. Would I target him? Sure. Am I going to spend considerable assets doing so? Nope.
Throw the pick at cap strapped teams. With Vegas coming into the fold (seems likely) they are going to need space and high end prospects/players that don't require protection. |

That's where acquiring a player like Trouba/Shattenkirk/Hamonic*/Barrie comes in. They play on the top pairing and Marchenko plays sheltered top 4 minutes, allowing him to develop.
He isn't a project; this kid has had experience in the WORLDS, in the AHL, in the NHL, and he has thrived in all scenarios. I can see why you might view him that way, but next year is going to be his big breakout year. |

I'd throw a couple 2nds at Detroit and see if they bite. He is not worth trading down for. |

Yet he was so good that he wasn't a regular in Detroits lineup. |

I wouldn't trade for Shattenkirk for two reasons...
1) Pending UFA
2) Has stated he wants to play out East (Boston or NYR) |

I do agree with the cap strapped teams perspective, but the thing is Detroit has the #16 and McAvoy is targeted to be draft in the #15 to #17 range, which makes that pick highly attractable to us since we would love to acquire a really great RHD prospect that makes our defensive pipelines looking way better.
As for considerable assets, the only thing you will be spending is the #4 draft pick. You would still have core players as major chips to use for making a trade and you could still offer sheet jones.
As for asset management, acquiring 2-3 really good RHD would do wonders for this team than drafting Tkachuk at #4 (McAvoy, Marchenko, Trouba/etc); that's just my opinion and it seems to be the majority of most (except for NEONDOUBLEDEON). |

I have said it before, I think the Oilers and Jets make logical trade partners. I think Trouba and Nurse would have to be central components of that deal.

Did you read the linked article at all? The head coach played the favoritism card against him. Players like Ericsson were played more yet they didn't even play as well as Marchenko when he was slotted in the lineup. He also spent time in the AHL prior to his callup. Once he got called up, he definitely helped out Detroit and he had good chemistry with Smith as well. |

Yeah but now you've burned the #4 for Marchenko who is still very much a maybe (and until he shows otherwise that's exactly what he is) and a rookie who may or maynot make an impact in the NHL.
How the hell is that going to help us THIS YEAR? A decade of poop is enough for me. Either take the best available player with #4 or trade it for a Hamonic/Barrie/Spurgeon+/etc...
